Look I am not a vista basher anymore... Vista can work "well enough" if you have a very fast computer and you are careful.. and of course you have SP1... I still cant use vista for my heavy duty geek stuff.. its too slow for my taste. But even if I get a 8 core machine with 16 gb ram, I will still be dualbooting

The problem is that Dell is shipping PCs with 512MB RAM as Vista compatible because they meet the MINIMUM RAM requirements. Vista runs like a 3 legged dog on 512MB RAM. thanks for taking the trouble to reply, but I found the solution, and it was very painless. I found some SATA drivers which matched the motherboard better than the ones which were automatically installed along with the OS and my machine has gone from being so unbelievably slow to very very speedy.

It was working very well until a week ago. I shut it down one night and starting up the next day took something like half an hour. The web browser needs a full minute to open up... every thing is so slow... I've ran a virus scan, ran a defrag, blocked or deleted useless start-up programs etc... and it's still slow.
